Unicorns and the Spirit of Romanticism
In the castle park of Rohan Castle, Saverne, the EU Stone Festival 2010 took place from May 28 to 30. The event was organized under the main responsibility of Norbert Stoffel, former director of the stonemasonry department at the vocational school in Saverne and president of the European Association of Stonemasons and Sculptors (EASMS).
A total of 158 participants—one-third from France and the rest from ten other European countries—created works in softer Savonnière limestone or the harder red Vosges sandstone (30 × 30 × 20 cm) on the theme “Mythical Creature Unicorn and Romanticism.” The sculptures were inspired by the coat of arms of Saverne, which features a “leaping unicorn.”
